NASA Aeronautics has the responsibility to provide high-risk, high-payoff technology capabilities and research infrastructure to support the nation’s aeronautics sector. This meant anticipating the needs of a huge and vital national economic sector – and further, anticipating the potential desires of the consumers, businesses, and government of the future. Working with NASA Aeronautics, we built scenarios to help them set priorities for technology research and infrastructure development. Then we facilitated workshops that brought in critical stakeholders to help us derive the needs of the future. NASA used the results to develop a list of new technologies they should pursue to satisfy the country’s future aeronautical needs. Later we applied a similar approach to several other subjects for NASA Aeronautics: management and organizational planning; aerospace traffic management; and research center business models.
